The Hope VI redevelopment of Rainier Vista was announced in 2000 which would level all existing structures to create a modern community of housing that has mixed use and mixed income components, a focus on growth and a retail core, and the commitment to revitalize an area that has long been neglected. The Boys & Girls Club (B&GC) is scheduled to be demolished by SHA in 2007, which will leave over 1,100 youth without a place of security and their “second home” if a new Club is not built. Many of those kids have been Club members for years. Recognizing the Boys & Girls Club as the community’s anchor for youth programming, SHA agreed to deed 2.7 acres of land in the heart of the redevelopment and contribute $1M in site development costs for B&GC to continue its vital service to this community. It was also determined that the current 13,000 square foot facility would not meet the increasing demand for these services. The daily attendance of between 100 and 150 kids currently far exceeds capacity of the building. Kids are crowded into one small games room, one gym and a computer lab. The teen space is a converted storage room. There is no art room or multi-purpose space. A small playfield has been neglected and is no longer usable. The building also suffers from a leaking roof, seismic concerns and failing electrical systems. A plan to build a $14.3 M, 40,000 square foot regional facility including traditional Club, dedicated teen space, two full size gyms, multi-purpose playfields and parking was launched.
